What are the Different Cricket Formats?

International cricket has three main formats. Test Matches, One Day Internationals and Twenty20. Each format will be scheduled to take a different amount of time, varying from five days to around three hours. With significant variations between the formats, online bookmakers are likely to have a varied rule book too.

Betting markets will be treated differently in the event of rain, shortened matches, and matches being abandoned. For example, some wagers may be voided if there is a reduction in the number of overs scheduled in the shorter formats. In a Test Match, similar bets may stand if there has been a minimum amount of play reached by that point.

Having a good understanding of how factors such as these may impact your selections is a key part of cricket betting strategy. This way, there will be no surprises after your bet is settled.

Betting on Cricket – Why is it Different from Other Sports?

Betting on cricket presents a unique challenge. Most sports operate by a universal set of rules which apply regardless of the teams involved or competition in question. That’s not the case with cricket though. There are different formats of the game and the type of betting markets available can vary depending on which one you’re looking at. Knowing about the variance in the formats and the impact this has on cricket betting markets is essential for the successful bettor

There are three major cricket formats played at the international level with variations of these on the domestic scene. All three involve 11 players per side but there are huge differences that bettors need to be aware of.

The length of a match and some rules and regulations vary hugely between the formats. Understanding these is a key part of cricket betting strategy and will help you make informed decisions about potential wagers. Online betting sites can also have different rules for each type of match, settling markets depending on the format being played.

This page acts as a guide to the different formats of cricket available with cricket betting sites in India. The individual format pages contain much more detail, betting advice and strategy for each of them.

How Long Does a Cricket Match Last?

It’s logical to ask how long each cricket match will last. Well, it depends on which format you’re referring to. Test matches are the longest form of the game. They are scheduled for up to five consecutive days of play. Shorter formats are concluded in a single day. One Day matches usually take around 10 hours to complete, including a break between the first and second innings. Twenty20 games are even shorter, with a full game taking 4-5 hours assuming no interruptions.

Cricket Format Length of a Match
Test Match 5 Days (8 hours per day)
One Day  9-10 hours
Twenty20 4-5 hours

Domestic Limited Overs Cricket

Domestic cricket competitions around the world tend to mirror the main international formats fairly closely. The exact set up of a particular competition will be a decision for the country’s cricket board who organise the tournament. For example, first-class one day cricket can vary from 40 to 60 overs per side in different regions.

Sometimes a country will operate competitions across all three formats in a single season if there is the demand and resources for them to do so. Usually, this will be a multi-day format similar to test cricket, a one-day competition and a Twenty20 tournament. You will be able to get free cricket betting tips for the majority of these matches too.

Domestic Cricket Competitions In India

India cricket supporters

Cricket is one of the most popular sports in India. The Indian national cricket team draws huge audiences of course, but domestic cricket competitions are heavily featured too. As such, betting sites that accept Indian players often have plenty of promotions centred around the different tournaments that run throughout the year. Free bet offers, prediction games and loyalty bonuses can be a welcome addition for cricket bettors in these situations.

The Ranji Trophy

Currently, the longest form of domestic cricket competition in India is the Ranji Trophy. As a first-class cricket tournament, it contains 37 teams. That’s at least one from every state or region in India. These sides are split into three tiers. Five teams qualify for the knockout rounds from each of the two top tier sections (Groups A and B) with two from Group C and the final participant from the lower tier.

The round-robin portion sees matches contested in a four-day format with knockout matches extended to five days if required. Should the match be cut short for any reason, the team leading after the first innings will be declared the winner.

The Ranji One Day Trophy (Vijay Hazare Trophy)

The Ranji One Day Trophy (sometimes known as the Vijay Hazare Trophy) is the most prominent 50 over cricket competition in India. As of 2018, the tournament is split into three elite groups with one lower-ranked “plate” group. The 37 teams are ranked based on their performance over the past three seasons to decide which group they are assigned to.

The Indian Premier League

The Indian Premier League is arguably the world’s best domestic Twenty20 competition. Established in 2008, the tournament has continued to grow in popularity with cricket bettors around the world. Many of the new and existing customer promotions on betting sites in India will focus on the IPL during the time that it runs. This is usually between March and May. Prize money for the 2019 edition stood at around $7.2 million (₹50 crore).

The eight teams taking part play each other home and away in a double round-robin group before the top four sides progress to the knockout rounds.

Dozens of India’s biggest names are involved plus some of the most high-profile players from around the world. Each team can name up to four foreign players in any one match and each squad can have up to 8 on their roster for a single campaign

There are three ways to acquire players. Firstly, via an auction where teams can bid for someone’s services as long as they remain within the salary cap. Usually, Indian players are at a huge premium during this process and bidding can reach eye-watering levels for the best talent.

Secondly, a team can trade one of their existing players to another team during a specific window with a player moving in the other direction in return. This trading process has to be done with the consent of the players involved and can only occur once during each pre-defined period.

Lastly, replacements can be signed for squad members that have sustained injuries. This can take place either before or during the Indian Premier League gets underway.

The Best IPL Betting Site

We know that the Indian Premier League is one of the biggest events on the cricketing calendar. Because of this, you need the best betting site available for the IPL and we recommend 10Cric. Not only do they welcome customers from India, but there is a huge range of cricket betting markets.

We’re confident you’ll find competitive markets on the selections you’re interested in. What’s more, 10Cric offer regular free bet and loyalty offers for their Indian customers. There’s also a free to play cricket prediction game with a 1,00,000 INR jackpot every game week.

Betting on Test Match Cricket

Test cricket is the original format. It’s still considered to be the purists’ choice and the best form in some circles. Played over five consecutive days with 90 overs scheduled in each, a Test match is the longest form of cricket. There are no coloured kits allowed, with the traditional white clothing worn by all players.

Each team is allowed two innings in a game. There are no fielding restrictions unlike the shorter forms of the sport. A day of test match cricket is separated into three sessions, usually around two hours each. The breaks between sessions are usually 40 minutes for lunch and 20 minutes for tea.

These sessions can be extended in additional time is required to catch up on lost overs in previous days or if the minimum 90 overs haven’t been bowled in the current day. In recent years, there have been some Day/Night test matches played. The first of these was played between New Zealand and Australia in 2015.

Due to the length and potential for changing conditions, a Test match is seen as the ultimate gauge of a teams’ mentality, endurance and patience. The same is true for betting on the format. It’s key to remain in a state of concentration for long periods while play is ongoing.

Although there had been matches played for several decades before, the first recognised Test match took place in 1877 between Australia and England in Melbourne. The rivalry between the two nations has continued to thrive with “The Ashes” series some of the most highly anticipated Test cricket on the calendar.

To date, 12 nations have been granted Test status by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The most recent additions came in the summer of 2018 with Ireland and Afghanistan added to the list. India were awarded Test status in June 1932, making them the sixth team to be included.

Betting on One Day International (ODI) cricket

Established in the 1970’s One Day International cricket has become a huge part of the calendar. Matches are scheduled for 50 overs per side, essentially a one innings shootout over a pre-defined time period. The team with the highest score wins unless there is a shortened game that requires the Duckworth Lewis Stern (DLS) method to be used.

Steve Smith Australia vs England World Cup 2019

Fielding restrictions apply to the bowling team at different stages during the match. These “Powerplays” dictate how many fielders are allowed outside the 30-yard circle at any one time. These have occasionally been changed if the authorities feel the balance between bat and ball has been tilted too far in either direction. Each bowler is only allowed to bowl 10 of the possible 50 overs for their team.

There is an ODI World Cup held every four years, usually, two years after the Twenty20 World Cup takes place. At the time of writing only 12 international teams have permanent One Day International status. However, in the past, the ICC has granted temporary status to teams ahead of major tournaments.

Betting on Twenty20 (T20) cricket

The newest major format is Twenty20 cricket. First trialed by the England and Wales Cricket Board  (ECB) in 2003 it was designed as a way for county sides to compete against one another. An average match lasts around four hours with each team facing 120 balls (20 overs) in their innings then a short break before the second innings.

T20 was designed to make it more accessible to sports fans that were used to action-packed games that lasted just a few hours such as football or rugby.

The Growth of Domestic T20 Cricket

Twenty20 was soon adopted by every major cricket-playing nation. In the years since its inception, T20 has spawned a host of domestic and international contests. Tournaments such as the Indian Premier League and Big Bash League are some of the most popular options for betting on cricket. International tours often include a series too and there is a Twenty20 World Cup every four years.

Indian Premier League IPL Poster

Because domestic Twenty20 leagues have been very successful, they present lucrative opportunities to players. As such, some of the most established names in international cricket have given up playing for their national team in order to represent several T20 franchises instead.

As with ODI cricket, betting on Twenty20 matches usually means a different set of sports betting rules from your bookmaker of choice. Knowing how your wagers will be affected by certain situations such as ties or shortened matches is an important part of online cricket betting.

Cricket Formats – Summary

Cricket is unique for betting, especially compared to other sports. Although the basic rules stay the same, there are multiple cricket formats that can impact the betting strategy. Knowing how Test matches, One Day International and T20 matches are treated differently by betting sites is an essential lesson.

Online bookies will have different markets for each format too. Some odds will be listed for Test matches but others could be unique to the limited-overs formats. As well as general advice, we will have cricket betting tips for every major competition that is played. That covers international tournaments such as World Cups or Test series to domestic matches from the IPL, Big Bash League and much more.
