Caribbean Premier League Teams and Home Grounds

The Antigua Hawksbills played in the first two editions of the CPL, but were then replaced by the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots. The Patriots are still part of the CPL in its full form.

The Zouks franchise became the Stars for a short period, but have since gone back to being the Zouks. The IPL and BBL have eight teams each, but the CPL is like the PSL in that it has just six teams.

The 6 CPL Cricket Teams and their Host Stadiums

  1. Barbados Tridents (Kensington Oval)
  2. Guyana Amazon Warriors (Providence Stadium)
  3. Jamaica Tallawahs (Sabina Park)
  4. St Kitts and Nevis Patriots (Warner Park)

  6. Trinbago Knight Riders (Queen’s Park Oval)

CPL Winners – Who Have Won The Competition?

The Tallawahs won the first ever CPL after clinching the 2013 final at the Queen’s Park Oval.

The Guyana Amazon Warriors have played five CPL finals, but not won one. They have finished as runners-up five times – and third twice. Two of their five final defeats came at Warner Park.

Trinidad have won all three of the finals they have played in. The St Kitts & Nevis Patriots and Barbados Tridents have won final defeat each.

CPL Team Year
Jamaica Tallawahs 2013
Barbados Tridents 2014
Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel (since renamed Trinbago Knight Riders) 2015
Jamaica Tallawahs 2016
Trinbago Knight Riders 2017

CPL vs IPL Comparison

The Caribbean Premier League and Indian Premier League happen mere months apart on the domestic T20 tournament calendar. Here is a list comparing the IPL vs CPL.

CPL IPL
6 Number of teams 8
2013 Year started 2008
Draft Draft or auction Auction
$2.6 million (₹19 crores) Total prize money $7 million (₹53 crores)
August, September When April, May
17 Squad size 25
4 Overseas players per XI 4
34 Average number of matches each year 56

How Does the CPL Draft Work?

Unlike the Indian Premier League and some other global T20 tournaments, the Caribbean Premier League operates on a draft rather than an auction.

Each of the six franchises have to pick 17 players, from a pre-determined pool, to fill their squads. The price of each player is subject to which round they are selected.

This is similar to the Pakistan Super League and Mzansi Super League player drafts.

A certain number of West Indies players must be retained from the previous year’s roster. One can be an overseas player. Marquee players are allowed to be signed by the franchises before the draft.
