The Stars of the Mumbai Indians – Past and Present
They’ve had several, and here are just a few.
Mumbai’s captain and leading run-scorer is as much of a threat at franchise level as he is in international cricket. Whether he opens the batting or arrives at the crease in the middle order, he is more than capable of taking the strongest bowling attack apart.
The West Indian all-rounder has been part of the Mumbai franchise for several years – and is pretty much more renowned in India than he is in the Caribbean. He is the franchise’s most capped player and is in the top five of the highest run-scorers and top wicket-takers. A world-class all-rounder, indeed.
The living legend that is the ‘Little Maestro’ is still the leading run-scorer in international cricket – and holder of most centuries. Whether his huge tally is eventually eclipsed by Virat Kohli remains in the balance, but few will forget his major impact on the Mumbai franchise as a player and mentor. One could argue that Tendulkar’s role now as a mentor and ambassador for the brand is almost more important than when he was hitting fours and sixes on the field.
The Mumbai Indians love having their resident bad boy around. How much they value him has been showcased in a documentary about the Mumbai franchise on Netflix. He, too, is a really good all-rounder. He can be selected as a batsman or a bowler.
Rayudu has never quite broken into the Indian ODI or T20I XI on a relatively permanent basis, but that has not stopped him from churning out plenty of runs for the Mumbai Indians. He is both a big-hitter and a hunter-gatherer, which makes him any bowler’s nemesis in the powerplay or through the middle overs.
The Sri Lankan pace ace, with his woolly hair and sling-like arm action, has been serving the Mumbai team for many years. Those lethal, toe-cracking yorkers of his are a sight to behold – and his slower ball is truly magnificent. Time will tell how long this fast-bowling workhorse can continue and if he is still a popular purchase at the auction.
Very much in the mould of Malinga, but with a higher action and quicker bowling speed, Bumrah is hot new property in world cricket. He finds that yorker length with remarkable ease and swing the ball a lot to boot. The right-armer has been a welcome addition to Mumbai’s more recent successes.
