Why Chris Green suspension won’t affect KKR

Spinner can't bowl in BBL

Spin bowler Chris Green, who will play for the Kolkata Knight Riders later this year, has been suspended from bowling after it was decided he has an illegal bowling action.

He won't be allowed to bowl for a minimum of 90 days in tournaments that are run by Cricket Australia. This means he won't bowl for the Sydney Thunder in the rest of the 2019-20 Big Bash League. His absence will likely limit the Thunder's push for the BBL title. Dafabet have the Sydney Thunder priced at 3.50 for the outright BBL win.

Green was bought by the Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 20,00,000 at the auction for IPL 2020. He will be allowed to bowl in IPL 13, as this competition is not run by Cricket Australia. Kolkata have won the IPL twice and will chase a third title this year. Kolkata will have England ODI captain Eoin Morgan and Australian fast bowler Pat Cummins to help their campaign. Cummins was purchased for Rs 15,50,00,000 – the most expensive in the 13-year history of the IPL.

“Green will be unable to bowl for a minimum of 90 days in Cricket Australia-run competitions, effective immediately. He will be permitted to play as a batter should the Thunder or Cricket NSW desire and can also play premier cricket (including bowl) under the supervision and with the consent of Cricket NSW during his suspension,” said Cricket Australia.

“Green was reported by umpires Nathan Johnstone, Mike Graham-Smith and third umpire Paul Wilson after the KFC BBL match between the Thunder and Stars at Sydney Showground Stadium on Thursday, January 2.

“As per the Suspected Illegal Bowling Action Procedures, Green then underwent testing at the Bupa National Cricket Centre on Sunday, January 5, under the guidance of Dr Luke Kelly.

“Results from the test were made available to Cricket Australia, which showed Green to have an illegal bowling action. Both Green and the Thunder were informed of the decision.

“After the 90-day suspension has elapsed, Green will be eligible to undergo testing once again with a view to returning to bowling.”

Chris Green pushing for T20 World Cup spot

Green has made a name for himself around the world in various domestic T20 leagues, the Birmingham Bears in the United Kingdom's T20 Blast, Guyana Amazon Warriors in the Caribbean Premier League, Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League and Toronto Nationals in the Global T20 Canada. He hasn't yet played international cricket for Australia, though. His bowling suspension should be over in time for the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia, though. He might be picked for the national team for the first time then.

Australia, with their home ground advantage, are among the favourites to win the T20 World Cup. India and England, who have won the World Twenty20 (now the T20 World Cup) are also offered for the title in popular cricket betting markets. Dafabet have India, England and Australia priced at 3.40, 4.00 and 5.00, respectively, for the outright win.

“We'd like to commend Chris and the Thunder for the way they have approached this process with complete cooperation and respect,” said Cricket Australia head of cricket operations Peter Roach.

“Chris undertook testing at the earliest possible time and satisfactorily replicated his bowling action in the controlled environment.

“We look forward to working with Chris in the coming months and conducting further testing once the suspension period has elapsed.”
