Who are Kings XI Punjab’s Most Notable Cricketers?
Kings XI Punjab’s squad has featured a host of well-known cricketers over the years. The team may not have been consistently able to make the IPL play-offs but there have still been some memorable displays for fans to enjoy.
Australian left-hander Shaun Marsh is the club’s top run-scorer in the IPL. He sits at the top of the club rankings with 2,477 runs in 69 innings, which he smashed between 2008 and 2017.
Marsh joined KXIP for the first IPL season in 2008 and quickly made his mark. He was awarded the Orange Cap for scoring the most runs that season. His form at the top of the order helped Punjab to what would be their second-best season to date with a third-placed finish. Marsh would go on to establish himself as KXIP’s key man over the next nine IPL seasons as he moved his way to the top of the run-scorer charts.
South African middle-order batsman David Miller is second in the Kings XI run-scorer table. He joined ahead of the 2013 campaign and has 1,974 runs to his name in 82 innings between 2012 and 2019. It was during his first season with KXIP that he recorded the third fastest hundred in IPL history. He bludgeoned 101 not out from just 38 balls against Royal Challengers Bangalore in Mohali. He was dropped in that game by opposition skipper Virat Kohli when on 41.
Miller captained the side at the start of the IPL 2016 but was later dropped after a disappointing start to the season. Miller was not retained by Kings XI Punjab ahead of the IPL 2020 Auction.
Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell played a big role in helping Kings XI Punjab to their best-ever season in 2014. Maxwell was quick out the traps that season and scored 95, 89 and 95 in his first three performances.
He is ranked as the club’s third-highest run-scorer in the IPL with 1,275 in 56 innings.
Leg-spinner Piyush Chawla has taken the most wickets for Kings XI Punjab. He sits at the top of the rankings with 84 wickets in 87 innings between 2008 and 2013.
Chawla joined for the very first season of the IPL and soon spun his way to an impressive record. He played an important role in helping KXIP to third position on the opening campaign. He later moved on to Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of the 2014 season.
Sandeep Sharma is second in the rankings for Kings XI’s highest wicket-taker. The right-arm medium pacer played for the team from 2013 to 2017 and has 71 wickets in 56 innings for the club.
Sharma has some notable spells to his name when playing for KXIP, including bagging three wickets for 21 runs on his IPL debut in 2013. He also gained notoriety for becoming the first bowler to claim the scalps of Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers in the same game in 2017.
