England batsman Dawid Malan will play for the Hobart Hurricanes during the 2020-21 Big Bash League in Australia.
Malan currently occupies first position in the International Cricket Council's rankings for T20I batsmen. He has been capped 16 times at T20I level. The left-hander has also collected one ODI and 15 Test appearances.
“I'm very excited to have someone of Dawid's talent and experience join the team. He is a proven performer at T20 cricket on the international stage and I'm looking forward to seeing him hopefully replicate that for the Hurricanes,” said Hobart head coach Adam Griffith.
“I spent some time with him when he was playing at Middlesex and he will fit into our group very well.”
Malan's List of T20 Franchises
The hard-hitting Malan was part of Yorkshire's recent T20 Blast campaign in the United Kingdom recently. He has also played for the Comilla Warriors in the Bangladesh Premier League – and Islamabad United and Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League. He also captained the Cape Town Blitz in South Africa's Mzansi Super League.
“The Big Bash is recognised as one of the leading T20 leagues in the world, and I'm excited to be joining the Hurricanes. I love the whole ethos of Australian sport, and really enjoy playing in front of Aussie crowds,” added Malan.
The Hurricanes have never won the BBL, which started in 2011. They have lost two finals. Griffith works with captain Ben McDermott.
“The Hurricanes team that's been built under Adam's leadership over the last couple of seasons is strong. We have a group that know each other well and play together well,” concluded franchise general manager Scott Barnes.
“The Big Bash League is all about our fans, and with a name like Dawid stepping up we're sure that they will be thoroughly entertained through the summer.”
Other Englishmen in the BBL
Other England stars will be involved in the 2020-21 BBL, too. All-rounder Liam Livingstone has returned to the Perth Scorchers. Batsman Tom Banton will play for the Brisbane Heat. Fast bowler Tom Curran will represent the Sydney Sixers.
The Sixers are the reigning champions, having beaten the Melbourne Stars in the 2020 final.
