The Hobart Hurricanes and Sydney Thunder did well enough to avoid finishing among the bottom three teams after the round-robin stage of the 2019-20 Big Bash League.
Both have advanced to the next stage of the Australia‘s top T20 tournament, which will see five sides compete for two berths in the final. The loser of Thursday’s Qualifier will play the Adelaide Strikers in the Knockout. The loser of the Qualifier will be out of the running completely.
The BBL, indeed, has one of the more complex qualifying stages among T20 domestic tournaments around the world. Regardless, this clash between the Hurricanes and Thunder should be a cracking affair as the ninth edition of the BBL nears an entertaining end.

Hobart Hurricanes vs Sydney Thunder – Team News
The Hurricanes will be without batsman David Miller for this match. He has returned to South Africa for the ODI series against England. Miller’s campaign was not overly good – and captain Matthew Wade and burgeoning all-rounder D’Arcy Short will be left to pick up the pieces.
The Hurricanes’ wickets have been evenly shared, suggesting they have not been over-reliant on one or two bowlers, like other franchises have. Seamer Nathan Ellis has been tremendous under pressure toward the death of the innings, with his pinpoint yorkers serving his team well. Qais Ahmed, in terms of taking pace off the ball, has been really good as well.
Seamer Daniel Sams has been outstanding for the Thunder this BBL season. He has set a new franchise record en route to 25 wickets in 14 matches. He’s had good support from Chris Morris, who will stay with the team after being excluded from South Africa’s ODI squad. He’ll be with the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League later this year, though.
Morris effectively powered Sydney into this stage of the tournament with a brief but match-winning cameo with the bat against the Perth Scorchers. It’s this ability to walk to the crease and go big from ball one that makes him so dangerous. Before him, though, the Thunder have Alex Ross, Callum Ferguson and Usman Khawaja to score the bulk of the runs.
Hobart Hurricanes vs Sydney Thunder – Betting Tips
From their international players to their local talent, there is star quality dotted across these two teams. Each and all will need to get it right individually and collectively to end on the right side of Thursday’s result.
Weight runs from Wade
The Hobart captain has had an outstanding eight months or so, having broken back into the Australian Test XI and now a step closer to leading the Hurricanes to a BBL title. He’s struck T20 form just at the right time, too, with 66, 56 and 130 not out from his last three innings. Something’s clicked for the steely Wade, who is at 3.40 with Bet365 to be Hobart’s top batsman in this match.

Straight up odds for Sams
The in-form seamer took a match-winning four-wicket haul the last time the Thunder played the Hurricanes, less than a week ago. He was deployed as late as third change in that match – and took the key wicket of Wade. At 3.25 with Bet365, Sams is a good pick to continue his fine form and be the top bowler for Sydney against Hobart.
Hobart Hurricanes vs Sydney Thunder – Prediction
Their record is a tight one, having taken it in turns to beat each other this season. Good old home ground advantage will certainly help Hobart this time. The Thunder travel well enough, though, so this is going to be a tight one.
Best Bet: Daniel Sams at 10.00 with Bet365 to be Player of the Match
